Retail Therapy

I have found that I go shopping more now that I live here. Not just grocery shopping, but Target shopping, Old Navy shopping, Michaels shopping, YouNameIt shopping. And I'm not really that much of a shopper.

I mentioned this to my younger daughter Mary, who lived in Las Vegas for many years, until she moved to Colorado a few years back. She said Vegas does that. Makes you into a shopper. I don't know if there is evidence that backs this up, but if so I offer these possible reasons:

* There is a lot of shopping here. It is standard in the Vegas Valley for all new developments to be "planned developments", including residential and commercial sections. In Vegas building goes on all the time and it's amazing how quickly new homes and businesses rise from the ground. So no matter where you live here there is shopping nearby.
* Many stores are open extended hours. They say Vegas is a city that never sleeps and that seems to be more true here than of other cities.  Most stores are open until at least nine at night most days, and many are open 24 hours.
* In the long summer there is little else you might want to do. If you work, then part of your day is occupied. If not, you might find yourself twiddling your thumbs, thinking of where to go. Except on those days that television is just the ticket. It is simply too hot to be wandering around outdoors.
* You can buy just about anything you are looking for. I found this to be not quite true when I went looking for a one-piece swimsuit not long ago. I'm a larger size and I found that there wasn't any wider range of selections here than in most cities. But if you are looking for crafty stuff or cooking stuff or clothing (other than that suit) or furniture or fabric or pottery equipment or...well, anyway, there is a good chance you'll find it somewhere around here.

Whatever the reason, I have had to curb my appetite for the air-conditioned stores and restaurants. I sometimes hit the gym or a theater or just wander around a casino. Casinos are cool and a good place to walk. They also offer attractions like art galleries, ever-changing gardens, fountains that can be seen from inside, and of course theaters. Including large live theaters where you can see live shows of all kinds. They are rather like amusement parks for all ages if you stay away from those slots.

I admit, though, that I don't spend much time in casinos. They serve as good locations for seeing a film mainly. They are usually good bets for putting up visitors, too. And many of them offer loads of shopping, too.
